Session-by-Session Outline

Session 1: Steady Ground (Awareness)

Goal: Help the person feel heard, steady and clear about where they stand.

  • Talk through what happened and how they’re feeling, without rushing to fix it
  • Cover the practical first steps after a layoff, including a reminder to review severance terms with an employment lawyer or financial advisor if needed
  • Explore early questions: What do I want to keep? What do I want to leave behind?
  • Introduce the AOC framework

Takeaway: A short “first 30 days” checklist and a strengths-inventory worksheet to complete before Session 2

Session 2: Know Your Value (Awareness)

Goal: Build an honest picture of who they are professionally.

  • Review the worksheet: skills, achievements, career history and highlights
  • Separate what they’re good at from what energizes them, since these are often different
  • Explore passions, values and what a good working day looks like
  • Question assumptions about what they “should” do next

Takeaway: A one-page Awareness Summary covering strengths, key wins, values and possible directions

Session 3: Choose a Direction (Ownership)

Goal: Turn self-knowledge into a direction.

  • Narrow possible paths: a similar role, a step up, a new function, a new industry, consulting or starting something of their own
  • Match the Awareness Summary to real opportunities
  • Test each option against their values, finances and lifestyle
  • Define 2 or 3 target role types

Takeaway: A written Career Direction Plan with target roles, target employers and the gaps to close

Session 4: Position Yourself (Ownership)

Goal: Make their story clear and compelling on paper and online.

  • Review the resume and reposition it around outcomes for the target roles
  • Rework the LinkedIn headline, About section and experience for recruiters and applicant tracking systems
  • Practice a clear, confident answer to “Tell me about yourself” and “Why did you leave?”
  • Plan a weekly search rhythm so the work stays manageable

Takeaway: Updated resume and LinkedIn guidance, a 60-second personal pitch and a weekly search schedule

Session 5: Open Doors (Change)

Goal: Build momentum through people, not just job boards.

  • Map their network: former colleagues, managers, clients and contacts
  • Draft outreach and follow-up messages that feel natural
  • Plan conversations with the hidden job market in mind
  • Build a strategy for recruiters and applications, including remote and international roles where relevant

Takeaway: A target contact list, outreach message templates and a 30-day networking plan

Session 6: Walk In Ready (Change)

Goal: Prepare for interviews and leave with a plan they own.

  • Practice interview questions for their target roles, including behavioural questions and the layoff conversation
  • Prepare for salary and offer discussions
  • Plan how to handle setbacks and stay resilient through a search that may take time
  • Set a 90-day action plan and decide how they’ll measure progress

Takeaway: An Interview Preparation Sheet and a 90-Day Transition Plan
